Charlotte Plains Outback Magic, a 27,000 hectare sheep and cattle station slightly east of Cunnamulla township on the Explorers Way, provides powered and unpowered sites, shearing shed showers and shearers quarters camp kitchen. It is a campground where guests can marvel at the thousands of stars that light up the night, and with daily activities including feeding animals, fixing fences and shearing sheep, there is always movement at the station.

Address: 1993 Charlotte Plains Rd, Cunnamulla

Open: All year round

Facilities:  Powered and unpowered sites, depending in what part of the station you choose to stay. Powered sites are near an amenities block with flushing toilets and hot showers, where you will also find a camp kitchen and laundry. Open fire pits and pet friendly.

Experiences: Owned and operated by Robyn Russell, a dynamic woman passionate about sharing her bush paradise with you, Charlotte Plains complements the standard offering with:

  • More than a dozen artesian baths that become ‘hot property’ at sunrise and sunset

  • A private bathing hut experience (additional fee)

  • Tag along and minibus tours (additional fee) where the property becomes animated through tales of characters like Jack the Bullocky and charismatic Willie the Camelman are shared

  • Options to learn about the property’s 130-year-old woolshed and what it was like to live on an isolated station when she was a child

  • Tour access to heritage treasures found in the station’s old Queenslander, nicknamed the House of Memorabilia

  • Birdwatching with 130 species recorded.

And it is not without modern technology, with Charlotte Plains boasting a swathe of eco-innovations to make your stay happy, safe and comfortable, including solar lighting and a solar-powered UHF radio as mobile coverage is non-existent. That’s another bonus!

Judges said:  It is obvious that a great deal of time and resources have been put into recent changes, with a focus on anticipating the needs of grey nomads and then introducing interesting and innovative ways  to meet those needs while maintaining the authenticity of this being a station experience.
